Francis Carling was born and raised in New York City.  He graduated from Fordham College in 1967, and from Yale Law School in 1970.  After a two-year stint as a civil litigator at the Legal Aid Bureau in New Haven, he returned to New York in 1972 and joined Sullivan & Cromwell, where he handled general commercial cases and eventually specialized in labor and employment litigation.  In 1980 he was recruited by Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts [now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman] to head its labor and employment litigation group.  In 1997, he joined a labor and employment boutique firm which was renamed Collazo Carling & Mish.  In 2007, he was named a New York SuperLawyer® in the field of labor and employment law.

Carling has participated in bar association activities at the local, state and national levels, and has been active as a director of both business and non-profit corporations.  He has served as a trustee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, Inc. since 1975, and is a former President of that agency.  He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
